What is Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Cosmetic acupuncture is an effective, non-surgical treatment used to reduce the signs of aging. It is based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which involve the insertion of very fine, disposable needles. This particular treatment was then designed to be used only for the face in a group of designated points on the face and body.

The superficial insertion on the face will increase the local circulation of blood and energy — called Qi (chi) — to the face and stimulate the collagen production which will fill out the lines and tighten the skin. It also tones the targeted facial muscles which will give firmness to the skin for a healthy, glowing complexion.

A 1996 report in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture reports that among 300 cases treated with chiromedic acupuncture, 90% had marked effectiveness with a course of treatment. The skin had become delicate and the treatment improved elasticity of the facial muscles, resulting in a better complexion and overall facial rejuvenation.

How does Cosmetic Acupuncture work?

The acupuncturist is able to use the meridians that either begin or end on the face to stimulate the balance of the energy and—at the same time—treat the underlying factors that contribute to the aging process. This involves the insertion of hair-thin, disposable needs in specific areas on the face, ears and hands. The needles are inserted into an energy pathway or meridian to improve the flow of Qi.

As the movement of the energy improves, a greater amount of energy and blood are circulated to the face, nourishing, hydrating, toning and diminishing the appearance of wrinkles. At the same time, we use additional acupuncture points, on the arms and around the ankles or below the knees to work on the inside of your body. This way, we are working holistically on the physical appearance and the underlying factors which influence how you look.

What is a typical course of treatment?

Patients have a course of treatment done two times per week for five weeks. Most acupuncturists find that in order to obtain real results, the process takes at least ten treatments. People begin to notice results somewhere between the fifth and seventh session. Maintenance may be need by the individual based upon factors such as age, type of skin, overall health, any history of sun damage, diet, lack of exercise, etc. We may choose to do maintenance, which could be once every month to just four times a year, depending on individual needs and responsiveness.

Cosmetic acupuncture treatments generally take between forty-five to sixty minutes.

"As we get older, we start noticing subtle
changes in the way we look. Those subtle
lines and puffiness slowly increase until we
find ourselves considering options to slow or
reverse the process.

Many women and men simply aren’t
comfortable with the idea or the expense of
extreme surgical procedures. Cosmetic
acupuncture offers a safe, affordable
alternative to help us feel and look
healthier and more youthful."
