Visceral Manipulation (VM)

Your body is made up of many interrelated components from bones, muscles, nerves, and the thick connective tissue called "fascia" to the internal organs or "viscera". Those organs are always in motion. When you breathe, walk and stretch, your organs move in your chest and abdomen.

A soft, hands-on manual treatment, Visceral Manipulation or VM therapy supports your body's ability to release restrictions and unhealthy compensations that cause pain and dysfunction. Rather than focus solely on the site of that pain or dysfunction, the VM approach evaluates the entire body to identify the source of the problem. Your VM therapist feels for altered or decreased motion within the viscera, as well as restrictive patterns throughout the body, then applies VM techniques. VM therapy re-establishes the body's ability to adapt and restore itself to health.

How Many Sessions Does it Take?
Because each person's situation is different, the number of visits will vary. Many people experience significant improvement within three to five therapy sessions; others may require additional treatment. Our trained practitioners will work closely with you to develop a plan based on your unique needs and how your body responds to treatment.

What Does It Feel Like?
VM is a gentle, hands-on therapy in which the practitioner seeks out the source of a pattern in the body where an imbalance or dysfunction may originate. Often that initial source is far from where the pain is felt. The treatment involves gentle compression, mobilization and elongation of the soft tissues related to the pattern. As the source of the problem is released, the symptoms will start to decrease.

How Did Visceral Manipulation Begin?
Visceral Manipulation therapy was developed by Dr. Jean-Pierre Barral of The Barral Institute, an osteopathic physician and registered physical therapist from France, who has been teaching VM in the United States since 1985. His clinical work with viscera (the internal organs) began while working at the Lung Disease Hospital in Grenoble, France. He has authored numerous professional textbooks and a book for the general public, Understanding the Messages of Your Body.

Visceral Manipulation Therapy

Did you know that every time you take
a breath, your kidneys move an inch?

When you inhale deeply, they move up to four
inches. Over the course of a single day, those
kidneys typically move a total of about half-a-mile.
That adds up to nearly 19,000 miles in a lifetime!
